In 1971, Starbucks was founded by Zev Siegl, Gordon Bowker, and Jerry Baldwin. The three first met while attending at University of San Francisco. The trio was inspired by Alfred Peet who opened the first coffee roasting plant and sold high quality beans and coffee maker equipment in his hometown business.

A business partner of Bowker’s named Terry Heckler noted that words beginning with the letters ST were compelling and dominant, leading the founders to create a listing of possible names beginning with ST. These names were then combined in order to find the most suitable one. The group deciphered “Star-buck,” the name of the chief mate in Moby-Dick. That’s where the company name Starbucks came from.

In the early 80s, the company was sold to Howard Schultz when he was on a business trip in Milan. He decided to convert the coffee-bean store into a serving espresso based coffee shop. Schultz began his journey as the CEO of Starbucks from the year 1986 to 2000. Starbucks aggressively expanded its franchise and later increased the number of stores in the Washington and West Coast regions. Schultz retired and was followed by Orin Smith that manages the company for the next five years and made it the largest company in fair trade coffee, and then increased its revenue up to $5 billion.

Jim Donald led a successful turnaround at the company during his time as C.E.O., generating significant earnings growth. In the time of the financial crisis of 2007 to 2008, Schultz came back as CEO and worked hard spending the following decade of growing Starbucks’ market share, rebranding around corporate, and expanding its offerings. Then Kevin Johnson succeeded Schultz as Starbucks’ CEO in 2017. In April 2022, Schultz returned to the position and continued serving in this role for the time being.

Starbucks purchased Coffee Equipment Company. They then began doing some tests with the “fresh-pressed” process for their coffee at several Starbucks chains in California, Seattle, Boston, and New York in 2008. They have already expanded throughout the United States, the Middle East, Asia, and other countries.

The company introduced a wider variety of coffee experiences. Starbucks offers hot and cold drinks, whole-gourmet coffee beans for its ground coffee, espresso, and Caffe lattes as well as a variety of teas (both hot and cold), juices, desserts, and other food items.
