Subway is a famous American fast food company that specializes in submarine sandwiches (commonly known as subs), salads, wraps, and beverages. In 1965, Fred DeLuca a 17 year old American businessman founded Subway which was financed by Peter Buck. It was first known as Pete’s Super Submarines and is located in Bridgeport, CT.

DeLuca and Buck also started a company in 1966 called Doctor’s Associates, Inc. Fred later identified the doctor to be Peter and his associate to be himself, another store was opened in 1966, which resulted in Dr. Buck opening 16 other stores by 1967.

After many name modifications in its early years, Subway was finally renamed in 1972 and began franchising operations in 1974. Subway peaked in the US at 27,129 chains in 2016, but has since shrunk each year after that. They can’t keep up with their success, rather than opening some new ones they have closed hundreds of locations including in some famous cities like New York City and San Francisco. In 2016 alone they closed over 400 restaurants in the US and a net loss was realized due to these closures for the first time. Subway‘s financial woes are so bad that the chain is struggling to pay workers and suppliers. Due to franchise closures in Europe, it has a negative outlook for its North America operations and its international division.

There were two main reasons for Subway struggling with growth, customer metrics show that it’s not just a matter of location density but also the quality of the food. When Subway first came around, they were more focused on fast food than trying to create a nicer dining experience. As part of their efforts, they’ve tried to improve their operations in recent years by shortening wait times and adding new preparation methods. In addition, the chain has also put a lot into marketing its ingredients and including healthier choices. As of 2016, there were 26,744 Subway locations around the U.S. The company was still beating out rivals like Burger King (23,525) and Wendy’s (14,966) for most U.S. restaurants

Since then, it has expanded to become a global franchise with more than 38,000 restaurants in 112 countries. In 2017, Subway was off of the fastest growing and dominating franchises in the world. By June 2021, that number grew to 21,796 locations (58.1% of the total) in the United States, making it much bigger than any other restaurant brand even though it is a chain of restaurants.

Subway has a wide variety of sandwich options, with several toppings. “Eat Fresh” is their slogan. This means that the sandwiches are made with fresh ingredients. A submarine sandwich is made by placing the ingredients on a split Italian roll and adding a variety of other items, usually meats, vegetables, condiments, and cheeses. Its name is derived from its similarity to the submarine “U” shape. Some variations of this subway sandwich are traditionally served at bus or subway stops in the US. Most of these sandwiches are not fried and they sometimes contain ham, salami, pepperoni, and other meat items.

Subway Food

Although the popularity of fast food has been on the rise, there is a growing concern that our consumption of these processed foods is not healthy. With this in mind, Subway introduced an option for their customers called Fresh Forward. The new menu includes sandwiches made without any processed meats and bread made with nutritious grains. It also includes toppings like avocado and roasted red peppers that are high in antioxidants and low in calories.

The popular fast food chain has been striving to find new ways to serve the public in an affordable, healthier way for quite some time now. Although their menus have changed over time, this is one of the biggest and most significant changes in recent years.
